What roof type does the Ford Ranger have?
On UK cars this is bare cab (clamp system). The Ranger Double Cab has a bare roof skin above the cabin; roof bars use a door-jamb clamp system, and load-carriers are often paired with cross-bed bars over the load bed.
What is the difference between dynamic and static load?
Dynamic is the maximum load the rack can carry with the car being driven, the smaller of the two figures. Static is the parked figure, and roof tents must respect it. Both are still capped by the vehicle’s own roof-load rating.
Are aero-shaped bars worth the extra cost?
For daily motorway use, yes, they cut wind noise noticeably and shave a small amount off the fuel-economy penalty of running empty bars. For occasional use, square-section bars are cheaper and no less safe.
Can I leave the crossbars on all year?
Yes, though empty bars cost roughly 1-2 mpg on a long motorway run. If the rack goes months without use, taking the bars off protects the mounting points from long-term weather exposure.
One thing many buyers miss
Dynamic and static load ratings measure two different things. Dynamic is what the crossbars can carry while the car is being driven, and it is almost always the lower number. Static is what the crossbars can hold when the car is parked, which matters for roof tents where you and any occupants sit on the roof overnight. A rack rated at 75 kg dynamic and 250 kg static is not two claims about the same load, it is one number for driving and one for camping, and both must respect the vehicle’s own roof-load figure in the handbook.
How to check before ordering
- Look under the side rail on your car: a gap means raised rails, no gap means flush rails, and a completely smooth panel means a bare roof needing a clamp kit.
- Confirm the roof-load figure in the Ford Ranger owner’s handbook; the crossbar rating is a maximum, not a target.
- If a roof box is on the plan, add its own weight to the intended contents before comparing against the dynamic rating.
