Roof rack basics: crossbars, rails, and dynamic ratings
A roof rack is not one product. It is a stack of parts - a fit kit, a foot or tower, a crossbar, and whatever accessory clamps to the bar - and each layer has its own rating, its own fit code, and its own failure mode. Getting one wrong is what leaves people with bars that rattle at 105 km/h or an accessory that refuses to seat on the bar it was allegedly designed for. This guide walks through the parts of the system in the order you actually pick them.
Rail types explained
The first thing to identify on your car is what the roof itself offers. The four common cases are raised rails (a hollow tube running front to back, with clear daylight between the rail and the roof), flush rails or "integrated" rails (a solid rail with no gap under it, sometimes with small anchor points revealed when you slide a cover), fixed points (small threaded or clip-in mounts hidden under trim covers, common on saloons and coupes), and bare roofs (no attachment points, requiring a clip-fit or door-frame kit). A track-equipped roof - a channel running the length of the roof, most common on vans and pickups with camper shells - is a fifth case, and it uses its own family of feet.
Rack makers publish a "fit guide" that maps your make, model, generation and body style to a specific foot pack and, where needed, a fit kit number. Two vehicles with the same nameplate but different sunroof or panoramic glass options can land on different fit kits, and the same is true across body styles - an estate and a saloon of the same model rarely share a rack. Always confirm fit by the kit number, not by "it's a 2023 Model X, it fits."
Static vs dynamic load ratings
Two numbers matter, and confusing them is where trouble starts. Thedynamic load is the maximum weight the rack system is rated to carry while the vehicle is in motion. It is set by the rack maker and it always includes the weight of the crossbars, feet, and any mounted accessories - not just the cargo. A common dynamic figure on a passenger car is 75 kg, though pickups and SUVs on the same rack platform often go higher.
The static load is the weight the roof can safely support at rest, which is why rooftop tents advertise big numbers - four adults on a stopped roof is a static case. Static figures are typically several times the dynamic figure. The number that governs whichever activity you are doing is always the lower of the automaker's roof rating and the rack maker's rating for that mounting style, and for dynamic use you subtract the weight of the rack itself before loading cargo.
Crossbar geometry
Crossbars come in four broad shapes. Square bars are the original steel-tube profile - cheap, strong, trivially compatible with wrap-around mounts, and the noisiest. Round barsappear on some OEM roofs and on a few aftermarket lines; they need a round-bar clamp on the accessory side. Aero bars are the wing-shaped extruded aluminium profile now standard across most aftermarket lines; they cut drag and noise and almost always include aT-slot channel on the top surface. Some aero bars are also T-slotted on the sides.
Bar length is the other geometry question. Longer bars give you room to run a cargo box next to a bike tray, but they extend past the roof edge and add wind noise if not trimmed to length. Many aftermarket systems ship the bar oversized and expect you to cut it with a hacksaw after measuring your desired overhang. Read the fit instructions before assuming the bar arrives at its final length.
Trim and accessory interference
The places a roof rack fails to sit right are almost always where the rack meets other roof hardware. Common conflicts include shark-fin antennas that sit exactly where a rear crossbar wants to go, sunroof or panoramic glass frames that push the front bar backward and reduce the mounting spread, and roof-mounted lidar or camera housings on newer driver-assist trims. Some vehicles ship two different fit kits depending on whether the sunroof option is present, and the automaker may derate the roof further when a full glass roof is fitted.
On the accessory side, the spread between the two crossbars matters for anything long. A rooftop cargo box wants at least 610 mm between bar centres, and often more. Kayak carriers, ski racks and canoe saddles typically publish a minimum spread as well. A short-roof vehicle with a big sunroof can be forced to a spread smaller than what a cargo box needs, and no amount of clamping pressure fixes that.
Weatherproofing and noise
Once the rack is on, three things decide how it lives with you. First,fill the T-slot when empty - almost every aero bar ships with a rubber strip that snaps into the top channel and cuts whistle. If you lose it, replacement strips are cheap and worth chasing down. Second, fit a wind fairing in front of the load bar if you notice cabin noise on the motorway; the fairing moves the turbulent air over the load rather than into it. Third,torque to spec. Rack feet use small fasteners with specific torque figures, often 4 to 6 Nm, and both under- and over- tightening lead to problems - loose feet drift and mark paint, over- tightened feet crack the plastic covers or dish the roof skin.
Water intrusion around fixed-point mounts is uncommon on modern systems because the mount seals against the pre-drilled threaded anchor with a captive gasket. Clip-fit and door-frame systems do not pierce the body, but grit trapped between the clip pad and the roof edge is what damages paint over time. Wipe the roof edge and the pad before every install, and check the pads for embedded grit if the rack has been off the car for storage.

Do I lose my roof rating if I run a rooftop tent?

Why do some accessories say they need a T-slot bar?
