Floor mat materials: TPE vs rubber vs carpet
The material label on a floor mat is doing a lot of work, and the same word can mean different things across brands. This guide walks through what TPE, rubber, PVC and carpet actually are, how each one behaves in cold, in heat, and against road salt, and where the fitment details (laser-scanned versus universal, retention hooks, second-row and cargo styles) decide whether the mat does its job.
What each material actually is
TPE - thermoplastic elastomer - is the material most modern all-weather mats are moulded from. It is a polymer blend that flexes like rubber but melts and moulds like plastic, which is why TPE mats can be shaped to the exact contour of a footwell. TPE is typically odour-neutral, recyclable, and stays flexible in cold. Colours range from black through cocoa and grey depending on the mould pigment.
Vulcanised rubber is heavier, denser, and slightly more resistant to sharp punctures than TPE. It has a familiar rubber smell out of the box that fades over a few weeks. Rubber mats are typically less deeply contoured than TPE because rubber is harder to mould in three dimensions, so most rubber "all-weather" mats sit flatter with a raised lip rather than following the footwell walls.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a legacy material still used on low-cost mats. Fresh from the box it looks similar to TPE, but PVC becomes stiff in cold, softens in heat, and can release plasticisers that leave an oily film. When a mat is marketed only as "vinyl" or "heavy-duty vinyl" and the price is aggressive, it is almost certainly PVC.
Carpet covers a range from cut-pile nylon to loop polypropylene. OEM carpet mats are usually nylon over a rubber- nubbed backing, and they exist for comfort and appearance rather than containment. They shed dirt into the underlying carpet when vacuumed and they saturate quickly in wet weather.
How each material handles weather
In cold, TPE keeps its flexibility down to around -34 °C in typical formulations; PVC starts to feel brittle by -18 °C and can crack if stepped on hard. Rubber is somewhere in between, depending on the compound. Cold-cracking is the failure mode that ends the life of most bargain mats after one winter.
In heat, a closed cabin can reach 60 °C at the floor in summer sun. TPE and rubber tolerate this without deforming; PVC softens and can imprint the pattern of anything left on top. Sun exposure through side windows will fade coloured mats over time - this is one reason black is by far the most common colour.
Against salt and slush, TPE and rubber both shed the water into the mat's containment channels; salt residue wipes off with a hose. Carpet mats absorb salt water directly into the fibre and hold it against the OEM carpet beneath, which is where rust starts on floor pans if not cleaned promptly.
Universal vs laser-scanned fit
A universal mat is cut from a rectangular blank with a diamond pattern; some are trim-to-fit with guide grooves. They rely on friction to stay in place and they never contain a spill. They are cheap and they cover many vehicles.
A semi-custom mat uses a shape roughly matched to the vehicle class - compact saloon, mid-size SUV, full-size truck - with a raised lip. It covers more of the footwell than a universal but does not follow the seat-track cutouts or the transmission tunnel bulge.
A laser-scanned or 3D-scanned mat is patterned from a physical scan of that specific vehicle's floorpan, and it wraps up the door sill, up the tunnel and back to the seat mounts. This is the format that actually contains a full cup of coffee if it spills. Because the pattern is model-specific, you must confirm year, generation, cab style (for trucks), and drivetrain (4WD transmission tunnels differ from 2WD) before ordering.
Retention, cargo mats and second-row shapes
The driver's mat must not move. Almost every modern vehicle includes retention hooks or twist-lock posts on the driver's footwell floor, and a properly patterned aftermarket mat has matching cutouts. If a mat does not engage those hooks, it can slide forward under the pedals - a safety issue serious enough that regulators have investigated it in the past.
Second-row mats are usually a single moulded piece that covers the entire rear footwell, sometimes with a raised centre bump for the tunnel. On three-row vehicles, verify whether the aftermarket set includes a third-row liner and whether it accommodates the folding seat. Cargo liners are their own product; they cover the boot floor and often include split-rear-seat support for vehicles with 60/40 or 40/20/40 folding rear seats.

Universal mats sit flat and rely on friction; anything that pools on them runs off the edge and into the carpet. The trade-off is that scanned mats are model- and often trim-specific, so retention posts and shape can differ across facelifts.
Do rubber and TPE mats stain the carpet underneath?
Uncommon with reputable brands, but possible with cheap PVC mats that use migrating plasticisers. If a mat feels oily on the surface after sitting in the sun, or gives off a strong plastic smell after weeks, the plasticiser is coming out and it can transfer to the carpet. Genuine TPE and rubber do not do this.
Should I keep the OEM retention hooks?
Yes, and you should confirm your aftermarket mat is patterned for them. OEM hooks or twist locks stop the driver's mat from sliding under the pedals, which is a real safety issue - the DVSA and other regulators have investigated unretained mats that piled up under the accelerator. If a mat does not use the factory retention system, avoid it on the driver's side.
